The Headline: Ridiculous or Still Necessary?

The Philadelphia Inquirer headline jumped off the page and smacked The Curmudgeon right in the face:

Prime Healthcare hires female CEO for Lower Bucks Hospital

Prime Healthcare is a small chain of hospitals that recently purchased Lower Bucks Hospital, which is located just outside Philadelphia.

But that headline.

It really struck The Curmudgeon as inappropriate. After all, there are plenty of female hospital CEOs – 18 percent of all hospital CEOs are apparently women, according to a recent report. That’s not a lot, and probably not enough, but is the hiring of a woman to run a hospital such a big deal that it cries out to be announced in a headline?

After all, you wouldn’t expect to see a headline that reads

Hospital hires Black CEO

Or

Hospital hires Mexican CEO

Or

Hospital hires gay CEO

Or would you?

Is the hiring of a woman to run a hospital such a big deal that it needs to be announced to the world in such a manner?

The Curmudgeon thinks not.  Or maybe he just hopes not – and hopes that hope is not just wishful thinking.

Hospitals…probably not…I must admit however…If Mayor(elect) Kenney had announced he named a woman to be the next police commish….that would have been Headline worthy…. so where do we draw the line ?
