Politics and the FCC

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission has said his organization will take a closer look at late night talk show host Stephen Colbert’s program after Colbert looked into the camera, addressed the president, and said, among other things, that “… the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–k holster.”

The Curmudgeon thinks Colbert is easily the cream of the late-night crop but that he went too far last week – much too far – with this particular remark.

The Curmudgeon noticed that Conan O’Brien used the term “Shut the f— up” – bleeped, of course, just as Colbert’s comment was – last week as well.

The Curmudgeon has no problem with the FCC investigating this Colbert business, although he doesn’t see what there is to “investigate” since the statement is available for all to see.  But if the FCC investigates Colbert and not O’Brien then it will be clear that the investigation is based on politics and the identity of the target of Colbert’s invective rather than the use of unquestionably inappropriate language on broadcast television.
