A Shout Out

To the students and faculty of the Anne Frank Elementary School in Philadelphia, which this week was cited by the city’s school district as the best elementary school in the city based on test performance, student growth, climate, and other factors.

The Curmudgeon’s interest? His sister has been teaching there for more than 15 years and is one of the many reasons the school earned this distinction – as it has several times in the past few years. Yes, The Curmudgeonly Sister is a public school teacher: you know, those overpaid people with easy, nine to three jobs. Only baby sister is in school by seven every morning, is rarely home before 5:30, spends evenings and weekends working, and teaches summer school. And oh yes, like all teachers in Philadelphia, she and her colleagues recently got their first raise in four years because Philadelphia’s elected officials and citizens have so little regard for the education of the city’s children.

Way to go, faculty and staff of the Anne Frank Elementary School in Philadelphia!

Congrats, Anne Frank and congrats, Curmudgeonly Sister. My not-so-Curmudgeonly sister teaches in the Philadelphia School system, too, and I know how hard teachers work and how important they are. Good on you!
