So Much for That Theory

This year Philadelphia public schools joined the growing trend of public school districts starting classes in late August instead of after Labor Day.  Among the reasons given for the change were first, that the system wanted more concentrated time for learning at the beginning of the school year (even though there’s a day off after a week of classes, for Labor Day) and because they insist that despite what some people may believe, it’s no hotter in late August than it is in mid-June.

So much for the latter theory:  on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the past week the city’s public schools sent the kids home after a half-day because of the heat.
